Associated Press Donald Trump addresses the Conservative Political Action Conference in Washington on Feb. 10. ByTHOMAS BEAUMONT Associated Press DES MOINES, Iowa Donald Trump says he would embrace the rigors of campaigning in Iowa if he decides to run for president, but Iowa Republican leaders say they doubt the celebrity businessman really knows what it takes to compete in the state's presidential caucuses and wonder if he would commit the time and effort needed. Although some state Republican Party leaders have welcomed the attention Trump's presidential ideas have brought to the 2012 race and look forward to a giant fundraising dinner he will keynote in June, they also express skepticism about him as a candidate that borders on contempt. Donald' will be wherever the cameras are, and nowhere else," said Doug Gross, a Des Moines Republican and longtime confidant of GOP Gov.

Terry Branstad. If he seeks the Republican nomination, Gross and others said, Trump would probably want to bypass the up-close campaigning and the behind-the-scenes meetings with local party activists that the Iowa caucus electorate expects from serious presidential contenders. "I don't think he's prepared at all for what it means to run in the caucuses in Iowa," said Sac County Republican Chairwoman Ann Trimble-Ray, a consultant to Iowa Republican Rep. Steve King and a leading party activist in GOP-heavy western Iowa. "I think that's going to shock the socks off this guy." Trump's prospects in Iowa, which has the first contest in the race for the 2012 nomination, became the subject of discussion this week after he discussed the possibility of running in a televised interview, and new RayBerquist WATFORD CITY Ray A Berquist, 64, rural Watford City, died April 20, 2011, at St.

Cohen, visited Iowa last month to meet with party officials and veteran operatives. Former longtime Iowa Republican Party finance director Darrell Kearney walked away from a meeting with Cohen doubtful that Trump's team understood the demands of a successful caucus campaign, where candidates must trek to small towns and rural areas and meet with small groups of people. "They thought as a celebrity candidate that he could spend a lot of money on television and radio. I personally don't think that will work," said Kearney, who has worked on Iowa caucus campaigns for 20 years. Steve Scheffler, a Republican National Committeeman from West Des Moines, said Trump would attract attention.

"But he, like every other candidate, is going to have to be willing and able to answer tough questions," he said. Trimble-Ray said Trump cannot be dismissed, though, because he is clearly exciting GOP activists. "People are looking for someone who can beat Obama, and they see him as a rock star," she said. "I will meet many, many people, maybe all of the people" in Iowa, Trump said last month. "If I decide to run, I will be shaking hands with everybody." Trump plans to announce his intentions sometime before his June 10 appearance at the GOP fundraiser in Des Moines. The Iowa caucuses are scheduled for Feb. 6. Not everyone is dismissing a Trump bid.

Jay Kenneth Klinge, a Virginia-based GOP operative who helped Ronald Reagan's campaign in Iowa more than 30 years ago, said this week he was volunteering to help, although it was not clear how. Trump called Gov. Nikki Haley of South Carolina, home of the Souths first primary, to underscore what observers describe as his seriousness about running. Since accepting the Iowa speaking invitation, Trump has called Iowa GOP officials and reporters in Iowa, promising to campaign aggressively in the state. Small cameras sent into that so-called "void" have yet to show any images of Marek. "We have secured additional cameras from external sources which will help us see inside the open areas," the company said, adding it's also testing air quality in the area of the collapse. Marek and his brother, Mike, had just finished watering down blasted-out rock and ore in an area called Stope 15, which has been mined for 14 years, Hecla said. The ceiling collapsed about 75 feet from the rock face of the deep tunnel, the company said. Mike Marek, who was working at the opposite end of the collapse from his brother, escaped unharmed.

Marek has been trapped with little food and water, likely in the dark, in temperatures well over 100 degrees. Rescue workers are drilling and blasting their way through rock in an effort to reach Marek's last known location. No cause has been established for the cave-in. The mine has shut down production to concentrate on the rescue effort. The Marek family has not spoken with reporters since the cave-in.

Hecla is the largest silver producer in the nation, from the Lucky Friday and the Greens Creek mine in Alaska. They lived and farmed there until 1991, when they moved into Ashley. She worked for Mcintosh County Social Services part-time from 1974 to 2004 as an in-home care specialist. Her husband died June 17, 2006.

MULLAN, Idaho (AP) Rescuers have blasted through 163 feet of solid rock in an effort to find an Idaho silver miner who has been missing since a cave-in last week, Hecla Mining Co. said Friday. But the company says the most difficult work is still to come, as they advance into possibly more treacherous conditions.

Workers still have about 57 feet to go before they reach a void inside a collapsed tunnel where they hope Larry Marek, 53, will be found more than a mile deep in the Lucky Friday Mine. "Crews have been progressing safely and quickly," Hecla said in a press release just before 6 p.m. on Friday. "However, as the crew advances closer (to where Marek may be), the work involved will become much more difficult, time consuming with new materials, equipment and supplies in order to advance the tunnel into potentially unstable ground." Hecla has decided not to start digging on a second rescue tunnel, to prevent interference with stability monitoring on the current excavation effort. The collapse happened April 15.

Rescuers have had no contact with Marek since. Hecla Mining said workers also continue to pump fresh air and water into separate bore holes that reach into the Puerto Rican painter dies at 94 SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) Jose Antonio Torres Martino, a Puerto Rican painter and writer who helped create and expand art and journalism institutions on the U.S. island, died Friday. He was 94. Torres died at Pavia Hospital in San Juan after a prolonged illness, said Margarita Fernandez Zavala, a close friend and an art professor at the University of Puerto Rico in Bayamon.

She said she wasn't sure about die specific illness. Torres was born in 1916 in Puerto Rico's second largest city, Ponce, whose setting on the island's southern coast inspired one of his more famous abstract paintings. His voice was well-known to Puerto Ricans from the 1940s through the 1980s, Fernandez said. "He was one of the pioneers of radio and television on the island," she said. "He was a man of elegant words." But Torres was a private man who did not seek the spotlight, she added.

"He was soft and sweet and tender," Fernandez said. "Everyone sought his opinion, something that he didn't necessarily like." Torres grew up in Puerto Rico, then briefly studied design and painting at the Pratt Institute in New York before economic troubles forced him to return home, where he began to work as a radio journalist. At age 22, he helped found the island's first magazine dedicated to radio journalism while he continued to paint in his free time. CIA touts enviro-f riendly shredding WASHINGTON (AP) The CIA is touting its version of eco-shredding on Earth Day, saying it's found a way to make the "burn after reading" process environmentally friendly. The intelligence agency said classified papers are shredded and burned using an on-site incinerator, which then generates steam to heat water at CIA headquarters. The CIA said the process reduces landfill waste by nearly 1,000 tons per year. And its employees also recycle more than three tons of plastic, glass, cardboard and other materials annually. The agency didn't offer to show reporters how its secret shredding is done, however..
