The funds may be used for science education, research or both, under the foundation's institutional grants for science programs at college and universities. Rep. Mark Andrews, announced the awarding of the grants. The funds must be used to meet the direct cost of science activities, but the schools are free to choose how they will be spent. Schools receiving the funds are the University of North Da- kota.

Omdahl said one in-state call er said, "Say, I already ran into a fellow who said he didn't have to pay tax on his groceries. Is that right?" The use tax applies the same as the sales tax on groceries. While several store managers at Fargo said they encountered no difficulties, a cashier at a downtown cafe said she wasn't worried because the tax doesn't start until tomorrow. When told the use tax applied starting Thursday, she was baf fled.

A customer waiting to pay his bill promptly said: "We don't have to pay no sales tax, right?" Neil Barkus, hardware store manager in Jamestown, said there was no confusion in his store, but he added. "I don't know why the merchant should get so involved in this political football."
