(Nelson Funeral Home, Maddock) By IBRAHIM BARZAK Associated Press Writer BEIT LAHIYA, Gaza Strip Israel stepped up pressure Wednesday on Hamas militants who launched improved, longer range rockets into the heart of a major Israeli city, authorizing the army to enter populated areas in northern Gaza. Israeli tanks and armored personnel carriers entered one of Israel's former settlements in northern Gaza Wednesday night and opened fire on a nearby Palestinian town, Palestinian officials and witnesses said. The Israeli military did not immediately confirm the movement into northern Gaza. Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Ehud Olmert convened his Security Cabinet and met with top military officials after militants fired rockets on Tuesday into Ashkelon, a southern Israeli city of 1 10,000 people.

Militants fired more rockets into southern Israel Wednesday, hitting an orchard in Ashkelon and the town of Zikim near the Gaza border. No one was hurt in any of the attacks, but it was the first time rockets have penetrated so far into Israel, showing militants have improved the range of the primitive weapons. The planned invasion threatened to be far bloodier than Israel's week-old offensive in the Gaza Strip aimed at freeing an abducted soldier held by Hamas-linked militants. The movement by Israeli forces on Wednesday night into the abandoned settlement of Nis-sanit appeared to be part of that new offensive. Israeli forces and settlers withdrew from Gaza nearly a year ago, destroying all 21 Jewish settlements.

An AP reporter in the nearby town of Beit Lahiya said five Israeli tanks, followed by armored personnel carriers, were making their way very slowly into the old settlement. Two other tanks took up positions atop a nearby hill as bull-dozers built sand embankments around them. Israel shelled a northern Gaza beach early today, Palestinian witnesses said, killing a Hamas militant and wounding seven officers from the Palestinian coastal police, four of them seriously. Palestinian security officials said the target was apparently a coastal police station. Viola Kordonowy Viola M.

MAYVILLE Marion Tastad, 94. WALHALLA Merton Dalzell, 85. WILLISTON Evelyn Italian intelligence officers arrested Mexico begins massive review of presidential vote MEXICO CITY (AP) As Mexico launched the official recount of presidential vote tallies Wednesday, conservative Felipe Calderon insisted his slim lead from a preliminary count would hold, and said he would be willing to include his leftist rival in his Cabinet as a show of unity. "Mexico needs us all," Calderon said in an exclusive interview with the Associated Press. In spite of Calderon's confidence, the recount as of late Wednesday showed the former Mexico City mayor Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador with a slight lead.

It was considered far from certain that the trend would hold. Insisting he was victorious, Lopez Obrador threatened to ignore the final tally because of "serious evidence of fraud." Calderon told the AP he would be willing to include his leftist rival in his Cabinet an effort to build a coalition government and avoid weeks of political impasse. But he said he did not believe Lopez Obrador would accept, adding that the two men had not spoken to each other since Sunday's election. Talks with Iran postponed a day BRUSSELS, Belgium (AP) Iran postponed for a day crucial talks aimed at easing its standoff with the West over its nuclear program, citing annoyance over the activities of exiled opposition groups, EU officials said Wednesday. EU foreign policy chief Javier Solana expressed surprise that Iran's top nuclear negotiator Ali Larijani did not appear for their scheduled meeting Wednesday.

Tehran said the meeting would go ahead on Thursday. Western diplomats have, threatened to restart efforts to punish Iran through possible Security Council sanctions unless Tehran stops its nuclear activities and agrees to talks by July 12 just a week away. U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said Iran needed to give "a substantive response" to a Western overture meant to end the crisis before the Group of Eight leaders meet later this month in St. Petersburg, Russia.

"If indeed Iran is trying to stall, it's not going to work," Rice told reporters at a Washington news conference with Turkey's Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul. "The international community has said that we need to get an answer, an indication of where Iran is going with this. We need to know if the path of negotiation is open or not." Pakistanis kill 25 tribal militants QUETTA, Pakistan (AP) Security forces backed by helicopter gunships targeted hideouts of tribal militants accused of blowing up gas pipelines and attacking officials in southwestern Pakistan, killing 25 suspects, a senior Cabinet minister said Wednesday. The security forces also seized a cache of weapons, including rockets, land mines and other munition during the two-day operation near Sui, a town about 210 miles east of Quetta, Interior Minister Aftab Khan Sherpao told the Associated Press. Sherpao termed the operation an important success," but did not elaborate.

Abdul Razak Bugti, the spokesman for the Baluchistan government said the victims were supporters of Nawab Akbar Bugti, a tribal elder who is allegedly leading the insurgency in various parts of the province. He said the security forces suffered no losses in the operation, which began Tuesday and ended Wednesday near Sui, where Pakistan's main gas fields are located. TroyTofsrud MINOT Troy A. Prosecutors say Nasr was taken by the CIA to the joint U.S.-Italian Aviano air base, flown to Germany and then to Egypt, where he says he was tortured. The operation is believed part of an alleged CIA program in which terrorism suspects are transferred to third countries where some allegedly are subjected to torture.
