Wednesday at Hertz Funeral Home, McClusky. Laverne Maye Bauer born Sept. 5, 1924, at McClusky, the daughter of John F. Bauer Jr. and Atilda "Tillie" Geissler.

She graduated as valedictorian of the McClusky High School Class of 1941, and attended NDAC (now NDSU) one year. She taught one term in a rural school before marrying Glenn Swendsen at Pickardville on Sept. 12, 1943. They farmed near Pickardville until moving to McClusky in 1965, where she was employed in various clerical positions, 23 years as business manager of McClusky School District, 16 years as clerk of Sheridan County Soil Conservation District, clerk of McClusky Park District, and bookkeeper at Bud's Furniture and Berg-Hertz Funeral Home. Laverne was a talented writer.

A journalism class in high school inspired her to write for publication. She was especially proud of the human interest stories that she researched and wrote for the McClusky Gazette and the Bismarck Tribune, highlighting the special talents and stories of those in her community. Laverne was dedicated to keeping family ties and friendships strong, and used letterwriting extensively to pursue that goal. Since 1980, she had sent over 1,000 letters and cards annually, supplemented in recent years by the many e-mail notes that she sent. She also wrote extensively about family history and memories.

She was an armchair traveler through her collection of picture post cards sent by family and friends from most U.S. states and many foreign countries. Laverne lived her whole life in Sheridan County, and was fascinated by history of her community, her state, her German-Russian ancestors and her country. She was proud to have attended the dedication of the North Dakota State Capitol building in 1935. She had an exceptional memory, and for years served as an unofficial historian for the McClusky community.

At the age of 75, she realized a childhood dream of seeing the year 2000, and was an assistant crew leader for Census 2000. Long dedicated to civic and political activities, she served on election boards as democratic judge and clerk for 30 years, was a delegate to two sessions of the Silver Haired Assembly, and received the Pioneer 4-H Leader Award at both the county and state levels. She was a charter member of the Busy Bees Homemakers and past president of Sheridan County Homemakers Council, a member of James Roberts Post No. 124 American Legion Auxiliary, serving as president for one year, was formerly secretary-treasurer of the McClusky Merchants Association, and was active in the Auxiliary of the Sheridan Memorial Home, where she held many offices and where she made her home for the last year of her life. A member of St.

John Lutheran Church since 1945, Laverne was dedicated to her faith community and served in leadership roles at the local and state levels of the Lutheran Women's Missionary League, including four years as financial secretary of North Dakota District LWML.
