Wednesday, November 8, 1989 The Bismarck Tribune Food Pag 3 WEDDINGS Burda-style capes are easy to make Ml III! Ill II 111! WWy- fj jpMHHKnMHK By EUNICE FARMER ji SEW SIMPLE Dear Eunice Farmer: I would love one of the new capes you mentioned in your fashion column however, I don't seem to be able to find a cape pattern with the slits in front. Can you help? NadlneT. Dear Nadine: I think there is a perfect cape pattern for you. It's Burda S197, shown as an evening cape as well as a buttoned version for daytime. If you haven't tried a Burda pattern, this is an easy one to begin with.

Once you have used one of these German patterns, I know you will use them more and more. Carefully read the instructions before you begin. Don't forget to add the seam allowances. As I have mentioned before, it's best not to line a cape. The lining prevents the cape from staying in place on your shoulders, and you need the friction between the wool and your clothing for comfort.

It's no fun to keep fiddling constantly with any garment. Dear Readers: We have had such a tremendous response to the of fer of the Chanel-inspired purse pattern that I am offering it one more time. This purse makes a great Christmas gift, as well as a wonderful accessory for yourself. Make it In velvet, Ultrasuede or Ultra- -leather. Send $7 and your purse pattern will be sent to you within four weeks.

Since all the world is going crazy over the renowned designer from Paris, Chanel, we have also designed a pattern with three variations of Chanel-inspired belts, using chains, braid, or beading as part of the design. If you wish this pattern, send $5 to me in care of this paper. There are very detailed instructions and sketches so that you won't have any trouble making your own. This is the year for accessories. They can really change the looks of any garment, and belts top the list in importance.

Dear Eunice Fanner: I smocked many garments for my children many year ago, and now I would love to smock for my grandchildren. My problem is finding patterns with the transfer dots. There don't seem to be any. What to do? Gertrude M. Dear Gertrude: What you and I did many years ago was French smocking where we used the transfer dots and had very limited patterns.

Today French smocking has almost been eliminated by English smocking where the fabric has been pre-pleated on a pleating machine and then we can use any of thousands of pattern plates or designs for our garments. It is much easier and I relly think it is more beautiful with all the pleats so nice and even. I did some research on your transfer dots and find that Kitty Benton, who designs lots of smocking patterns, has a McCall pattern 4508 sized from 2 to 8 with several versions and the transfer dots you want. Please check it out. (If you have any questions or comments, write to Eunice FarmerKing Features Syndicate 235E.
