(Fidler Funeral Home, Spearfish) RAY Last Saturday night I went to see Dear Cousin Ray-His bright wide flashing smile was gone, stilled by unconsciousness. No longer could he eagerly say yes when I asked if he wanted a good-bye hug and kiss. My embrace lay on his unresponsive brow, the same strong form, yet different now. He was on a long journey, a long journey we cannot follow yet.

I recall when first we met as children-cousins in high glee! We raced each other, the foot race, our fathers urging at our sides, each proud of his own seed. Competitive we were, yet somehow one in spirit. Was it the speed our father liked to see? No, just the need to test our skill--our will to win. You're Schields! Give it your best and then some! Take some pride in what you do! And now he lies at cemetery hill. Not a week has passed.

The long procession, the friends and family in a long, long line. The race of life is done at last. Run your race and run it well, our fathers said, and now he rests until his prize he gets. schield Rosemary Wetch Rosemary Wetch, 76, Bismarck, formerly of Mandan, died Nov. 24, 1999, in a Bismarck hospital.
