But he has had no gas to do any drying for about two weeks. "I haven't had any natural gas since this fall and only one propane tank since then. When we're operating, we can use one tank of propane per day," he said. Jim Heibult, manager of the Farmers Co-op Elevator Co.

at Harrisburg, said he had been without gas for about 10 days but that he had hired some portable driers from local farmers to help ease the problem. "We've got more corn than we can handle," he said, "but most of the corn will be out of the fields this week. We haven't had to pile the corn yet." Heibult cited a shortage of railroad boxcars as one of the contributing factors in the corn pile-up problem. (AP) Fire early Thursday gutted Simpson Hatchery on the main street of this tiny southeastern North Dakota community on the Minnesota border. Firemen from nearby Wahpeton helped Fairmount firemen battle the blaze. Strong winds hampered the firemen and for a time endangered other business buildings. Cause of the fire was not immediately determined. One American Reported Dead In Indochina SAIGON (AP) The U.S. Command announced Thursday that one American was killed in action in Indochina last week and six were wounded. No deaths from nonhostile causes were reported, and the previous week's total of missing and captured was reduced by one, apparently because a missing man was declared dead or some other adjustment was made in the Pentagon's records. The week covered by the report ended at midnight. The losses being suffered this week in the heavy air attacks on North Vietnam will be included in the summary to be announced next Thursday.

The South Vietnamese command reported 356 of its troops were killed in action last week, 1,263 were wounded and 79 were missing. It claimed a total of 1,628 North Vietnamese and Viet Cong killed. The allied commands now have reported these total casualties for the war: killed in action, 303,555 wounded, 10,291 dead from nonhostile causes, 1,709 missing or captured. South killed in action, 430,594 wounded. U.S.

Soviet Terms Hinge On Viet War: Brezhnev MOSCOW (AP) Leonid I. Brezhnev said Thursday that future Soviet-American relations will depend to a large extent on settlement of the war in Vietnam. The general secretary of the Soviet Communist party condemned the new bombing attack on North Vietnam and called for a speedy end to "the dirtiest war in the history of the world." He said the Soviet government will spare no efforts in its support of North Vietnam's "courageous struggle." Brezhnev was the chief speaker at the opening of the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the formation of the Soviet Union. ADVERTISEMENT What do doctors recommend for patients in pain? (AP) Gov. Richard Kneip, says South Dakotans should try to conserve fuel during what he called a period" of potential fuel shortage. Kneip said he has been advised by various sources, including the Office of Emergency Preparedness, that a potential fuel shortage exists in the state. He said the shortage is due to problems in transportation of the product and heavy demand during the recent low temperatures, rather than a shortage in production or stock of fuel. Grain elevator operators had complained that they were unable to get propane and natural gas needed to dry corn harvested late this year.

Wet corn started piling up in the streets of some area towns as early as two weeks ago when a sudden cold snap caused a surge in demand for fuel. Most grain elevators buy fuel on a standby basis and are among the first to be shut off when shortages occur. In addition, the supply of bottled gas has been very low, and area elevators have done little drying in the past week. Much the same situation is occurring all around the midwest as heating fuels have been in short supply. And elevator operators say that if there is no break in the weather or an improvement in the supply of gas for their dryers, hundreds of thousands of bushels of corn lying on the ground may spoil.

Early this month, wet corn began piling on the residential streets of Canton. Subsequently, city fathers declared a temporary emergency and allowed the corn to be dumped awaiting drying at local elevators. A spokesman for the Farmers Elevator Co. in Canton said "the corn is backing up and there's a lot more to come." It was estimated that 50,000 bushels of wet corn had been dumped at Canton by midweek and the pile is still growing. The spokesman said there was still a lot of corn in the field around Canton, but he looked for a break in the cold weather to help alleviate the problem.

At Baltic, the situation was more serious. Kenney Alfson, manager of the Baltic Farmers Elevator said: "I've got about 100,000 bushels on the ground here, but we're lucky, it's been pretty dry."
